Associate Veterinarian

Pets First Veterinary Center is a well-established, AAHA-accredited practice looking to add an amazing new associate!  Our four-doctor hospital boasts a committed veterinary team who provides exceptional client service and care.  We display this unrivaled commitment through attending continuing education, embracing technological advances in veterinary medicine and service, and most importantly, administering compassionate care to all pets entrusted to us.

Our clinic is equipped with ultrasound, digital radiography, digital dental radiography, laser therapy, and a laser surgical unit.  The four-exam room facility is spacious and well-maintained while offering preventive and urgent care appointments, as well as surgical and dentistry services to our many long-term clients.  We truly value our team approach and encourage collaboration on cases. We are searching for candidates that will help us further elevate our level of medicine.

Veterinary medicine is challenging, and the hours can be grueling, but we are excited to offer a four-day work week with alternating Saturdays.  Our hospital is located in Castle Hills, nestled in north central San Antonio, just off the freeway for an easy commute from any area of the city. Pets First is also minutes away from Hardberger Park (with walking trails for a lunchtime break), the San Antonio International Airport, and North Star Mall.

Customer Service Representative

Description

The Customer Service Representative will serve as a direct liaison between our clients and veterinarians, ensuring that both the patients’ needs and clients’ expectations are met.  He/she will be responsible for communicating treatment plans; maintaining meticulous patient records and documentation of client communications; processing patients’ prescriptions; and collecting payment for services rendered. The Customer Service Representative will also be required to answer incoming phone calls and emails in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner. This position reports to the Front Office Manager and will also receive direction from the Lead Technician, Practice Manager, and Medical Director.

Job Requirements

The Customer Service Representative must possess the ability to work well with people, displaying empathy and understanding while supporting the philosophies and procedures of the hospital. The position requires being able to communicate tactfully and maintain calm compassion in emotional situations, as well as to generally provide our clients with an experience that goes above and beyond their expectations.  The Customer Service Representative must be comfortable interacting with animals and working in an environment that can become busy, loud, and/or stressful.

Groomer

Description

The purpose of the Groomer position is to provide care, grooming and basic hygienic maintenance to clients’ cats and dogs. The Groomer plays an integral role in between-visit care by looking out for signs of illness or other health conditions in pet patients. Physical requirements of the position include lifting and carrying records and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs., as well as requires sitting and standing for extended periods of time. Groomer may be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. Working conditions also include potential exposure to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.

Compensation Structure

The Groomer position pays 50% of the position’s production. The Groomer is financially responsible for the purchase and maintenance of all hand tools, while the practice assumes responsibility for the purchase and maintenance of all large grooming equipment (i.e. tables, dryers, tubs, etc.)

Job Requirements
  • Observe patient appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
  • Take charge of and handle patients; as required, restrain hard to control animals.
  • Admit pets to be groomed, noting owner’s specific instructions and estimated pick-up time.
  • Perform grooming services, including clipping, hand scissoring, medicated and general cleansing, parasite control baths, pedicures, medicated dips and ear cleansing, as required for each pet.
  • Provide care for animal housed/visiting the hospital; perform work according to standard hospital protocol, including following special instructions.
  • Report signs of illness, disease, injury or unusual activity to medical staff.
  • Perform general maintenance of grooming room and yard, including (but not limited to) daily cleaning of cages, tubs, grooming tables, grooming tools, and yard; vacuuming and mopping, emptying trash, and performing monthly dryer and clipper maintenance.
  • Groom animals, utilizing techniques which vary depending on type of hair, coat, breed and owner instructions; bathe and dry animals; perform pedicures and clean ears.
  • Recommend retail products to clients that would aid in home grooming care of pets, as required.
  • Display tact and diplomacy when interacting with staff members and clients.
  • Apply knowledge and skills in controlling and/or handling individual animal temperament.
Qualifications Desired:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Graduate of reputable grooming academy or training program preferred or equivalent on-the-job training
  • Knowledge of grooming practices for wide range of small animals, including hand-scissoring
  • Above-average competency in handling animals, including the ability to gain animal confidence when restraining them for grooming
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Experience interfacing with customers
  • Willingness to stay after hours or work extra hours when needed, especially during holidays

Kennel Assistant

Description

The Kennel Assistant will have responsibilities in multiple aspects of the hospital’s operations, including animal care and treatment, customer service, and housekeeping duties. We are looking for applicants who have a strong work ethic and want to practice at the highest level of their abilities. This position reports to the Practice Manager and will also receive direction from the doctors, Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, and the Medical Director. Tasks assigned to the Kennel Assistant may include:

  • Animal Care and Treatment Responsibilities – restraint of patients; obtaining fecal and urine samples; assisting with toe nail trims, ear cleanings, anal gland expressions and other grooming tasks, as needed; minor bathing; minor mathematics (for dilution of chemicals); cleaning of surgical equipment; restocking and taking inventory of hospital supplies; observing contagious diseases and isolation protocol and complying with hospital safety standards; assisting doctors and other staff during emergency procedures; moving patients in and out of treatment area, as required
  • Customer Service Responsibilities – assisting receptionists with filing and maintaining charts; appropriate record keeping; knowledge of computer system; filling prescriptions (with technician direction); providing physical assistance to clients with multiple pets or large purchases; demonstrating compassion, sympathy, and professionalism when interfacing with clients during high-stress and emotional situations
  • Housekeeping Responsibilities – maintaining facility cleanliness through assigned tasks that may include: vacuuming and mopping; removing garbage; doing laundry; dusting; sanitizing treatment rooms, tools, and equipment in accordance with sanitation protocols; cleaning animal kennels and litter boxes; replenishing supplies

Job Requirements

The Kennel Assistant will have frequent contact with clients and patients in a fast paced and changing work environment. He/she must be comfortable working around sick, injured, or unruly animals in an environment where the noise level can be moderately to very loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand: walk: use hands and fingers to reach or feel: climb, balance, stoop, kneel or, crouch. Compliance with hospital safety and employee policy manual is expected. The employee must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. unassisted.

Qualifications Desired:
  • Ability to spell, alphabetize, and perform basic mathematics
  • Basic competency and comfort using computers and standard office technology
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and customer service skills
  • Ability to take direction, retain information, and ask questions when clarification is needed

Veterinary Technician

Description

The Veterinary Technician will be responsible for inpatient care; surgical monitoring; dental procedures (within the allowable limits provided by the law in California); radiology; sample collection and diagnostics; and client services. We are looking for applicants who have a strong work ethic and want to practice at the highest level of their abilities. Our doctors take the time with the clients and staff to explain procedures, and we expect our staff to practice the same level of caring communication in dealing with clients. Salary for the Veterinary Technician position is commensurate with experience.

Working Conditions

The Veterinary Technician job requires a 32-40 hour work week, with possible intermittent weekends, holidays, overtime and/or evening work. Compliance with hospital safety and employee policy manual is expected. The Veterinary Technician will have frequent contact with clients and patients in a fast paced and changing work environment. He/she must be comfortable working around sick, injured, or unruly animals in an environment where the noise level can be moderately to very loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand: walk: use hands and fingers to reach or feel: climb, balance, stoop, kneel or, crouch. The employee must be able to lift up to 35-40 lbs. unassisted and up to over 100 lbs. with assistance.

Qualifications Desired:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Current RVT license in the state of California or minimum of two years working in a veterinary hospital or clinic
